What to wear to the theatre (UK Guide)

Wondering what to wear to the theatre in the UK? You’re not alone. While theatre dress codes have relaxed significantly over the years, it’s still easy to feel unsure – especially if you’re heading to a West End show, a regional theatre, or a special performance.

The short answer is you don’t need to dress formally, but a little effort is always nice.

Most UK theatres do not have a formal dress code. Jeans, trainers and casual outfits are generally acceptable, especially for matinees and mid-week performances. I’ll be completely honest, I’ve attended the theatre straight after work with my laptop bag, or after a fitness day in workout clothes. It’s very rarely a concern.

However, theatre is still considered an occasion by many, and there are several times when I’ve dressed up more if I felt like it. In a nutshell, if you choose to dress up, you’re not going to be laughed at.

Dressing in evening/formal wear is often more common during:

  • Evening shows
  • West End performances
  • Special trips or celebrations.

As a result, most people aim for smart casual, rather than everyday wear.

What does ‘smart casual’ mean for the theatre?

Smart casual is the safest and most common choice for UK theatre-goers. It strikes a balance between relaxed and polished.

Smart casual usually includes:

  • Dresses, skirts or tailored trousers
  • Blouses, shirts or knitwear
  • Smart jeans with a structured top
  • Loafers, boots, smart trainers or low heels

Best avoided:

  • Sportswear or gym clothes
  • Flip flops
  • Very distressed or ripped clothing

If you’d be comfortable wearing it to a restaurant, it’s probably suitable for the theatre.

What to wear to an evening theatre show

Evening performances tend to feel more special, particularly in London’s West End.

Good options include:

  • A midi dress or jumpsuit
  • Smart trousers with a blouse or shirt
  • A blazer or tailored coat

You don’t need to be glamorous, but evening audiences often dress slightly more formally than during the day.

What to wear to a matinee performance

Matinees are generally more relaxed and practical.

You’ll see:

  • Casual dresses and knitwear
  • Jeans paired with smarter tops
  • Comfortable shoes for walking

Comfort is key, especially if you’re heading out sightseeing before or after the show.

What to wear to the theatre in winter

UK theatres can get warm inside, even in colder months.

Winter tips:

  • Wear layers you can easily remove
  • Bring a coat that fits under your seat
  • Opt for closed-toe shoes

Scarves and jumpers are useful, but avoid bulky outerwear that may feel uncomfortable once seated.

What to wear to the theatre in summer

I’ve personally been sitting in the stalls on one of the hottest days of the year. In this case, no matter how good the air conditioning is, it just can’t cool the room fast enough sometimes. Therefore, summer theatre trips are all about balance.

Consider:

  • Lightweight fabrics
  • Dresses or breathable trousers
  • A light jacket or cardigan for air-conditioned venues

Avoid overly casual beachwear, even in hot weather.

Can you wear jeans to the theatre?

A really commonly searched question is whether jeans are too casual for a theatre trip. However, jeans are perfectly acceptable in most UK theatres, and no one will judge you for wearing them.

What about trainers?

More often than not, I wear trainers to the theatre. I’ve never felt uncomfortable wearing them. However, there has been the odd occasion where it’s felt more people have dressed up for an evening show, and I’d feel slightly underdressed.

However, the chances of several people wearing trainers to your theatre performance are incredibly high.

Final thoughts

Theatre in the UK is a welcoming and inclusive environment, and there are never any expectations to dress up. Of course, there may be shows like Rocky Horror Story where fans dress up in line with the theme, but this isn’t compulsory.

A smart casual outfit will never feel out of place. Whether you’re attending a West End musical or a regional tour, you should aim to prioritise comfort above all, since you’ll spend most of your time in your seat.

When in doubt, dress for the occasion rather than the rules. Comfort, confidence and a little personal style matter far more than formality.
