Is Zakopane worth visiting?

In my opinion, it is absolutely worth visiting. However, it depends on how long you want to stay.

Some travellers stay longer during the winter months to enjoy the snow activities available, while others visit as part of a day trip from Krakow.

Krakow is known for its history and city culture, whereas Zakopane is all about mountain landscapes and alpine-style living. Because of this, we opted for a slightly longer break to Zakopane rather than the typical one-day trip.

How much does it cost to travel from Krakow to Zakopane?

Bus tickets usually cost between £5-£10 per person, depending on the operator and booking time.

Train tickets are generally more expensive, particularly for first class, but still affordable compared to many European countries.

Our first-class train tickets from Krakow to Zakopane cost around £22 for two people without booking in advance.

Our return bus tickets cost around £14 for two people.

Best ways to travel from Krakow to Zakopane

During our trip, we took two modes of transport between the two destinations. We travelled by both train and bus, and both had their pros and cons.

Travelling by bus

For most travellers, the bus is the easiest way to travel between Krakow and Zakopane.

Buses are frequent, affordable, direct, and often quicker than the train. Most services depart from Kraków’s main bus station, right beside Kraków Główny train station. Zakopane Bus Station is also very close to the town centre, where you can walk into town or get a taxi.

Bus options

FlixBus is one of the most popular options for tourists travelling from Kraków to Zakopane. Depending on traffic, the FlixBus journey usually takes around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.

While FlixBus is well-known internationally, local Polish operators are also extremely popular and often run more frequently. Local companies sometimes offer slightly faster journeys and additional departure times throughout the day.

During our visit, we used a Szwagropol bus for the return journey to Krakow and found the process very straightforward. Several operators were running frequent services throughout the day, including Szwagropol, Majer Bus, MaxBus, and FlixBus.

Is the bus better than the train?

It really depends on your preference. However, the bus is generally faster, cheaper, more frequent, and more direct.

The only downside is traffic. During weekends, holidays, and snowy winter periods, roads into and out of Zakopane can become extremely congested.

If you’re travelling during peak ski season or on a Saturday morning, expect delays.

@magentaadventures How to get from Zakopane to Krakow by bus🇵🇱🚌 We travelled back to Krakow using a local Polish bus service from Zakopane Bus Station and found the whole process really easy. Multiple operators were running throughout the day, including FlixBus, Szwagropol, and MaxBus. The journey took around 2 hours and cost us roughly £14 for two people. We also took the train from Krakow to Zakopane - you'll find the video on my page. Travelling by train

The train journey between Krakow and Zakopane can usually range from just under two hours to over three hours, depending on the service. If you’re in a rush, it’s worth asking the information desk how long the specific train journey will take.

While the train can be slower, it’s often the more relaxing option. We purchased train tickets from Kraków Główny station to Zakopane railway station, which is close to Zakopane Bus Station and within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town centre.

Unless you’re travelling through peak season, our advice would be to check times in advance if you can, but try to book the tickets at the station. We found that a lot of prices were increased when we tried to book online.

Taking the train to and from Zakopane and Krakow is ideal if you’re looking for:

  • Extra legroom
  • Access to a toilet
  • Scenic rail journeys
  • Less reliance on coach travel
  • Avoiding potential road traffic stress

The route through southern Poland becomes especially beautiful as you approach the mountains.

First class vs second class on Polish trains

If you’re taking the train to Zakopane, upgrading to first class is often worth it. It is extremely inexpensive compared to train ticket prices you’d find in countries like the UK.

The overall experience is much more comfortable in first class, often including quieter and more isolated carriages, fewer passengers, and larger seats. First class is also helpful if you need additional luggage space.

For a journey approaching 2-3 hours, the small extra cost can make a big difference.

@magentaadventures How to get from Krakow to Zakopane by train 🇵🇱🚆 We travelled from Kraków Główny to Zakopane by first-class train and it was a serene little experience. The journey was relaxing, scenic, and hugely affordable compared to UK train prices. The closer we got to the Tatra Mountains, the better the views became ⛰️ We also returned to Krakow via bus - the video is on my page. Should you take a day trip to Zakopane?

A single-day trip to Zakopane is very popular for people visiting Krakow. If you only have limited time in Krakow, an organised Zakopane day tour can actually be the easiest option.

Most tours include:

  • Return transport from Krakow
  • Hotel pickup
  • Gubałówka funicular tickets
  • Stops at traditional villages
  • Thermal baths
  • Time in Zakopane town centre

Many tours also include English-speaking guides, which removes the stress of navigating transport independently.

Can you visit Zakopane in one day?

Yes, and many people do.

Zakopane works particularly well for visitors wanting to experience the highlights without committing to a longer mountain stay. Tours are ideal for travellers wanting a simpler, more organised experience.

A typical Zakopane day trip from Krakow lasts around 10-12 hours, including travel time. However, if you want to go hiking in the Tatras or experience more of the alpine culture, staying a little longer is usually the better option.

Best time to visit Zakopane

Zakopane changes dramatically by season. We visited at the end of March, which is shoulder season in this area. Some excursions were closed in preparation for summer, while others had limited opening hours. However, we benefited from fewer crowds and still found plenty of things to do.

Winter

Winter is the busiest period thanks to skiing, snowboarding, Christmas markets, and snowy mountain scenery. Travellers can also expect increased prices, particularly on accommodations, due to increased tourism demand.

Summer

Summer is ideal for hiking and outdoor activities, with warmer temperatures and long daylight hours. Mountain excursions are particularly beautiful during summer, when the landscapes are greener, and hiking trails are fully accessible.

Autumn and Spring

Autumn often offers quieter streets and beautiful mountain colours. Spring is less crowded, but weather conditions can be unpredictable.

Tips for visiting Zakopane from Krakow

Book ahead in Winter

Zakopane is one of Poland’s busiest winter destinations, especially for those interested in winter sports. It’s worth booking tickets and excursions in advance to avoid disappointment.

Bring layers

Even in spring and summer, mountain weather can change quickly.

Wear comfortable shoes

Whether you’re planning to hike in the mountains or simply stroll around Zakopane’s cobbled streets, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.

Our experience travelling from Krakow to Zakopane

During our trip, we travelled to Zakopane by first-class train and returned to Krakow by bus, which gave us the opportunity to experience both options.

The train journey felt noticeably more scenic and relaxing, especially as we approached the mountains through southern Poland. First class was also far more affordable than we expected compared to UK rail prices.

On the return journey, the bus was quicker overall and extremely straightforward. We simply booked the next available service directly at Zakopane Bus Station and had multiple operators to choose from.

If we were visiting again, we’d probably choose the train for the outbound journey and the bus for the return.

What’s the best way to get from Krakow to Zakopane?

For most travellers, the bus is the best combination of speed and price. FlixBus and local coach operators offer affordable and frequent connections that make day trips incredibly easy.

However, if comfort and scenery matter more to you, the train offers a far more relaxing and enjoyable journey.

If you’re short on time or simply want a stress-free experience, organised Zakopane tours from Krakow remain one of the easiest ways to explore the Tatra Mountains in a single day.

Whichever option you choose, Zakopane is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Poland and easily one of the best day trips from Krakow.
