Mamma Mia! UK Tour Review

Theatre Review: Mamma Mia! at Palace Theatre Manchester

Few musicals can claim the same universal appeal as Mamma Mia! – and from the moment the overture begins, it’s clear that audiences are ready to say “thank you for the music.” As the UK tour arrives at Manchester’s Palace Theatre, the atmosphere in the auditorium feels more like a celebration than a typical theatre performance.

At times, it felt as though every single audience member was bobbing along to the music, and it’s easy to see why. With its sun-soaked Greek island setting, bold colours, and a soundtrack of ABBA’s greatest hits, Mamma Mia! remains one of the most infectious feel-good musicals around.

A glittering night of energy, nostalgia and joy.

Sarah Earnshaw was undoubtedly a standout of the evening. Her Tanya commands attention every time she steps on stage – glamorous, confident, and razor-sharp with her comedic timing. She perfectly balances the character’s sultry confidence with moments of wonderfully clumsy humour, making her an absolute joy to watch.

Her performance of Does Your Mother Know is a standout moment of the evening, played with such playful confidence that the audience clearly knows they’re watching one of the show’s biggest highlights. The number is further elevated by the surrounding ensemble, who bring huge energy and precision to the choreography. Pepper (Joseph Vella) is particularly memorable here, delivering a confident, charismatic performance that perfectly matches Tanya’s playful bravado. It’s one of the show’s most entertaining sequences and a real highlight of the evening.

Earnshaw also shines during Chiquitita, featuring Rachel Oates, who stepped in as Rosie for this performance, as the duo delivered exactly what audiences hope for from that iconic moment. Together they created a brilliant dynamic, full of warmth, humour, and genuine chemistry.

Bill, Harry, and Sam

The trio of Richard Meek (Harry), Mark Goldthorp (Bill), and Luke Jasztal (Sam) work wonderfully together. Their dynamic feels natural and full of personality, bringing plenty of humour and heart to the story.

Mark Goldthorp, in particular, delivers some of the evening’s biggest laughs with perfectly timed comedic moments. His chemistry with Rachel Oates’ Rosie is especially entertaining, particularly during Take a Chance on Me. The pair play off each other brilliantly, creating a scene that is both hilarious and charming – easily one of the most memorable moments of the night.

Richard Meek brings warmth and likability to Harry, along with strong vocals, while Luke Jasztal captures Sam’s charm and sincerity. Together, the three form a genuinely entertaining trio that anchors many of the show’s most enjoyable scenes.

Lydia Hunt as Sophie

Lydia Hunt brings strong vocals to the role of Sophie, delivering several of the musical numbers with impressive clarity and power. Her stage presence is engaging, and her voice is undeniably beautiful and perfectly suited to the ABBA soundtrack.

There were moments where Hunt’s interpretation of Sophie felt slightly more grounded than the character is often portrayed. Traditionally, Sophie carries a youthful sense of innocence and romantic excitement, but Hunt’s take offers a slightly different perspective. Her portrayal leans more towards determination and strength, with that playful naivety more understated than audiences might expect.

Jenn Griffin as Donna

Donna is such an iconic role that expectations are naturally high, particularly with previous portrayals from performers such as Meryl Streep on screen and Mazz Murray on the West End stage. Jenn Griffin brings a stunning voice to the character and shines in some of the show’s most emotional moments, particularly during Slipping Through My Fingers and The Winner Takes It All, where the emotional core of the story truly lands.

At times, however, Donna’s presence felt more understated than audiences will expect from such a central figure. In larger ensemble moments, especially, the character often blended into the wider cast rather than standing firmly at the centre of the action. Griffin’s interpretation leans towards a more measured and grounded Donna, which differs from the bold, fiery energy many audiences have come to associate with the role.

As with any iconic character, reactions to this interpretation will likely vary – some may appreciate the more restrained approach, while others may miss the commanding presence traditionally associated with Donna. That said, Griffin’s vocal performances in the show’s key emotional numbers are undeniably strong, allowing the character’s vulnerability and warmth to shine through.

Ensemble, choreography and staging

If there’s one element that truly elevates this production, it’s the ensemble. The dancers are truly exceptional, bringing huge energy to every scene and fully embracing the colourful, high-spirited world of the show.

The choreography is vibrant, slick, and consistently entertaining. Many of the biggest moments feel driven by the ensemble’s movement and enthusiasm, and their presence helps maintain the show’s infectious momentum throughout.

Visually, the production remains just as bold and bright as audiences expect. From colourful costumes to lively staging, the show fully embraces its joyful, sun-drenched aesthetic.

Final thoughts

Mamma Mia! remains one of the most beloved musicals for a reason. It’s packed with iconic songs, joyful choreography, and a story that celebrates friendship, family, and love.

While some casting choices were slightly unexpected, the production as a whole delivers exactly what audiences come for: energy, nostalgia, and a theatre full of people singing along to ABBA classics.

By the time the finale arrived, the Palace Theatre felt like one big ABBA party – and it’s impossible not to leave with a smile.

Mamma Mia! The Musical is at Manchester’s Palace Theatre for a limited run. If you’re looking for a colourful, high-energy night out filled with songs everyone knows and loves, this UK tour still delivers plenty of feel-good fun.
