Best time to visit New York City: A month-by-month guide

New York City is a year-round destination, but every month offers a very different experience – from snow-covered streets and empty museums to packed sidewalks and rooftop season in full swing.

If you’re trying to decide when to visit New York City, this month-by-month guide breaks down weather, crowds, prices and what the city actually feels like, so you can plan the trip that suits you best.

Weather: around -2 to 6°C

Crowds: Low

January and February are the quietest months, which means it’s cheaper to visit New York City. This is because the Christmas rush has calmed down and the holiday crowds have gone, making hotel prices drop and queues at popular attractions quieter.

January and February are ideal times to visit New York City if you:

  • Are you looking for better value on flights and hotels
  • Prefer museums, galleries, and theatres to outdoor sightseeing (fewer queues)
  • Don’t mind the colder weather.

The downside is that it can feel very cold in the city during these winter months. However, it’s still a beautiful time to visit.

March - April

Weather: varies from 2 – 17°C

Crowds: Moderate to busy

Spring begins slowly in March and properly blooms in April. While March can still be a little unpredictable, April brings longer days, blooming parks, and a noticeable lift in energy.

Expect St Patrick’s Day celebrations in March, cherry blossoms and spring colours in April, and more outdoor dining and events returning.

April is often considered one of the best times to visit New York City, especially for first-time visitors.

May - June

Weather: around 13 – 27°C

Crowds: Busier

May and June offer some of the best weather of the year. The city feels vibrant but not overwhelming, and walking between neighbourhoods is genuinely enjoyable.

These months are perfect for sightseeing, long walks, rooftop bars, and outdoor dining. Accommodation prices rise quickly, so booking ahead is essential.

July - August

Weather: around 21 – 30°C
Crowds: Busy

Summer in New York City is intense. The heat and humidity can slow things down, but the city makes up for it with constant festivals, outdoor events, and late-night energy. Central Park is the place to be if you’re visiting during these hotter months, so plan for nice strolls and picnics.

Good to know:

  • July is especially busy and expensive
  • August feels slightly quieter as locals leave the city
  • Air-conditioned attractions become essential

If you’re comfortable with heat and enjoy a lively atmosphere, this period can still be hugely rewarding.

September - October

Weather: around 10–25°C

Crowds: Busy

September and October are definitely some of the best times to visit New York City. The summer heat fades, but it’s not too cold, and the stunning autumnal colours arrive while the cultural calendar is in full swing.

October, in particular, is ideal for travellers focused on culture, food and the arts.

November - December

Weather: December can see 0°C, while November can get as warm as 15°C
Crowds: Moderate, then very busy

A New York City getaway at Christmas time is a dream trip for many. Early November is underrated as it’s cooler, calmer, yet still enjoyable before the festive rush begins. From late November through December, the city transforms into a winter wonderland. Travellers in December will notice the Christmas markets and lights appear, seasonal shows and performances dominate, and visitor numbers and prices sharply increase.

December in New York City is truly magical, but crowded and expensive. November offers a quieter alternative with better value.

So, when is the best time to visit New York City?

  • Best overall: May to June and September to October
  • Best for budget: January to February
  • Best for culture and theatre: September to October

If you’re a first-time visitor, aside from ticking the Christmas trip off your bucket list, late spring or early autumn offers the most balanced experience. Repeat visitors may enjoy the calmer winter months or the high-energy summer season.
