Christmas Time in Copenhagen: An Itinerary Guide

Copenhagen is known as one of the happiest cities in the world. With its colourful buildings and a mermaid statue as an icon, it’s no surprise why people adore the city. Despite its appeal, Copenhagen is rarely found at the top of adventurers’ bucket lists. But for those who visit, it surely becomes a strong contender for one of their favourite destinations in the world.

An excellent economy, ethical working conditions for residents, a capital city and the most populated in Denmark: the city is characterised by positive and friendly locals. You’ll surely become fond of the beautiful canals and stunning attractions. Yet, at Christmas Time, Copenhagen transforms into a real winter wonderland with unforgettable Christmas Markets and breathtaking decor in the Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli Gardens

Opening in 1843, Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest running theme parks in the world. The wonderful park inspired significant figures such as Walt Disney and Hans Christian Andersen, the author of famous fairytales such as The Little Mermaid.

The magic is in the air from the moment you step into the park, while at Christmas time, the glistening decor and grand Christmas Trees will amaze visitors of all ages.

Home to one of the oldest working wooden rollercoasters, Tivoli Gardens is a must-visit for all. A stand-out for Tivoli is the traditional essence of the theme park. Engulfed in history, it is great to experience an amusement park that hasn’t been excessively modernised. Not only this, but you’ll be happy to know that the queues are often short. Therefore, you can enjoy your experience while feeling safe.

A Tivoli Christmas

Each area is filled with so much character and colour. At Christmas Time, have a stroll through the snow-covered paths to admire the cosy lodges and colourful lights. Mesmerising Christmas Trees can be spotted everywhere you look, with a ride on the stunning Ferris wheel offering exceptional panoramic views of the park and Copenhagen.

Other highlights of the park include the beautiful Japanese Padoga (also known as The Chinese Wall) which stands tall with colourful, bold lighting. The lights of the pagoda reflect in the romantic lake where visitors can enjoy a cosy ride on the Dragon Boats.

Tivoli also boasts a huge variety of dining options with plenty of seating areas to enjoy. In the food hall, your palette will travel the world with outlets including authentic Indian cuisine, classic Danish treats, and well-prepared sushi. Other restaurants and snack stalls can be found throughout the park, spoiling visitors for choice when it comes to eating.

Copenhagen Christmas Markets

From local handmade gifts to irresistible food, the markets in Copenhagen will certainly get you in the Christmas spirit. A full day can be easily filled by walking around the cosy markets as the city transforms into a Christmas village.

Larger areas such as King’s New Square are filled with festive fun, while you can also find plenty of smaller spots if you prefer. Additional markets accompany the colourful houses which can be admired while walking down the Nyhavn waterfront.

The spectacular service from those who work at the markets, and the spacious seating areas and cosy, heated lodges make an extremely pleasant dining experience. In the cosy, heated lodges, visitors can socialise with other friendly tourists and locals, making this a welcoming and enjoyable Christmas experience for all.

Nyhavn

Nyhavn waterfront is beautiful all year round. Lined with bold and bright townhouses, bars and restaurants from the 17th and 18th centuries, it’s a must-visit for anyone who travels to Copenhagen.

On the waterfront, photography lovers will be in their element visiting Nyhavn. While those who just want to relax can sit and admire the extraordinary surroundings. This location is a delight any time of the year, so if you can’t visit Copenhagen at Christmas, don’t worry as you’ll still find beauty at Nyhavn.

The Little Mermaid

The known icon of Copenhagen is The Little Mermaid. It can be slightly out of the way from other tourist hotspots, but it is worth the visit for some history and beauty. The bronze statue is by Edvard Eriksen and is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale.

You can visit the Little Mermaid statue all year round and she’ll still be just as beautiful. The Little Mermaid statue represents a mermaid becoming a human, while she can be found gracefully sitting on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade.

The beauty of Copenhagen at Christmas

Christmas in Copenhagen will be sure to exceed all expectations. The city becomes a sparkling winter wonderland, with the spectacular Tivoli Gardens and cosy markets. However, with happiness in the air and several sights to see, the beautiful city is incredible all year round.
