The New York City skyline from the top of the rock

The best locations for a perfect New York City photo

New York City is a photographer’s paradise, but taking photographs for Instagram has now become the norm. Not only are professional photographers searching for the most iconic shots, but bloggers, travellers, and almost everyone on social media enjoy taking that perfect snap.

New York City is truly like no other. There are countless unique photo opportunities on every corner. If you’re looking for some of the best Instagram spots in NYC, these locations will be sure to bring some colour and character to your photo album.

A quick tip for taking photos in NYC

For those who are looking for more intimate photo opportunities, aim to try and beat the crowds. Upon visiting the city, there’s no surprise why it gets its name as the city that never sleeps, so trying to take a photo with no one in the background can be difficult.

But how do you beat the crowds in such a busy destination? Our best advice is to visit popular locations as early as possible. The crowds tend to rush in from noon onwards, so spend your morning visiting some of these beautiful places so that you can find the space for that perfect photo opportunity.

1. Use the Empire State Building as a backdrop

One of the most iconic landmarks in New York City is the Empire State Building. But, you don’t need to actually visit the building to get the best view. You may find that it’s best to take photographs with the Empire State as a backdrop rather than from the landmark.

The Empire State Building itself offers breathtaking views of the city from the top floor observation deck, which is even better to visit in the evening or at sunset. However, opting to visit the Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Centre may find you the perfect shot, and view, of the concrete jungle found in the New York City skyline. Making your way to the top of the Rockefeller Centre will give you a beautiful image of the Empire State Building while it stands in all its glory.

The Rainbow Room inside the Rockefeller Centre will also provide beautiful views while you can enjoy a quirky cocktail. However, the Rainbow Room is an indoor bar, so if you’d prefer to see the view outside of those four walls, the top of the rock will provide that full panoramic experience. As well as the Empire State Building, the observation deck will give you breathtaking views of other significant landmarks such as the World Trade Centre and even the Statue of Liberty at a distance.

Large, open windows are also found on the top of the rock while approaching the lowest observation deck, where you can capture a warmer, homely shot of the city, as well as the viewing machines (see the above image) which are just a couple of steps from the windows: the perfect prop for your Instagram photos.

The best place to purchase tickets to the Top of the Rock observation deck is on the Rockefeller Centre’s official website where prices are found from $34.

2. Central Park

Another must-visit spot for photographers, and anyone else visiting the busy city, is Central Park. This urban oasis offers a variety of photographic opportunities and makes a perfect backdrop for a romantic day out with winding paths, beautiful greenery and famous locations such as the Bethesda Fountain and Terrace. If you’re a Gossip Girl fan, the Bethesda Terrace is the same location where Chuck and Blair get married. So, you can feel like a true Upper East Sider!

It’s not difficult to capture mesmerising images while wandering around Central Park. There is so much to do and see, with such beauty found at every angle. However, for a unique perspective, you can take a boat ride on the lake for a shot of the city skyline in the background, or put on your ice skates and spend an hour on Wollman Rink

3. Times Square

No trip to New York City would be complete without a visit to Times Square. This colourful and bustling area is a photographer’s dream, with bright lights, billboards, and street performers. Be sure to visit at night for a truly spectacular shot of the area’s famous neon lights.

For those wanting the perfect Instagram snap, keep in mind that there are several street photographers wandering around. These photographers are known for taking your snap without you knowing, which can produce a perfect, candid and natural image of your true amazement and feelings towards the city, without feeling the pressures of posing for the perfect shot.

Not all street photographers will put the effort into capturing the perfect, candid shot, as most of them will be there for financial reasons. But, if you are lucky enough to have a good street photographer spot you in the square, they will usually approach you and you may need to purchase the image if you fall in love with it.

4. The High Line

So, you’ve in New York City. You’ve seen the popular locations: Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square. But have you ever heard of The High Line?

The High Line is a decommissioned elevated railway that runs along the west side of Manhattan to 34th Street in Midtown. Full of art and characters, the lesser-known location is perfect to capture a great shot while still enjoying a relaxed experience away from the rush of the city.

The elevated park offers a serene and peaceful escape, creating the most romantic and intimate backdrop. Visit the High Line during sunset to watch the sun disappear into the stunning skyscrapers of New York while the evening lights begin to shine. This romantic hotspot has several seating areas that will provide the perfect view to the incredible city.

5. Dumbo, Brooklyn

If you’re looking for a more urban photographic experience, head to the Brooklyn Bridge. This iconic structure offers a great perspective on the city, and the bridge itself is an impressive subject.

Take a walk over the bridge from the Manhattan side and into Dumbo, Brooklyn. Dumbo offers the most spectacular views of the skyline where you can capture incredible shots of iconic landmarks such as the World Trade Centre.

While in Dumbo, head over to Pebble Beach and Brooklyn Park to find those perfect views and take the best photos. It’s better to visit in the morning to avoid the crowds of like-minded travellers also admiring the views.

6. The Edge

Similar to the top of the Rockefeller Centre, the edge offers outstanding panoramic views of the skyline. Tickets can be purchased on The Edge’s website with prices starting at around $35, where you will find yourself on the highest observation deck in New York City.

The glass observation deck will make you feel like you’re floating while looking at the whole of the city: from Central Park to the Statue of Liberty, while those who are up for an adventure can also climb the 1,200 + foot skyscraper and view the city like no other.
