10 of the best things to do in Paris

Paris… is always a good idea. It’s a city that knows how to live: full of history, art and architecture. Paris might not be for everyone, but if you take a moment to truly appreciate its beauty, you’ll understand why it is one of the most visited cities in the world.

Whether you’re there for a romantic getaway, a trip with your friends or family, or even as a solo traveller. Paris is a must-visit. As the actress, Caitriona Balfe, once elegantly put it: “you never forget your first love, and for me, that will always be Paris…”

So, what is there to do? Here are a few tips for a mix of budgets when you visit one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Budget Friendly

1. Stroll the streets of Paris

Paris is one of the best places to just walk. Maybe even grab a scooter and explore. The streets are lined with beautiful cafes, restaurants and shops that you can admire at your leisure. You will find yourself lost many times as you wander through this magnificent city, but don’t be afraid! Ask for directions if needed.

You don’t need to just visit the landmarks! Go to a small restaurant or cafe, and take a moment to appreciate the architecture around you and the stunning houses and apartments where the residents live. There is beauty in every direction, and you certainly won’t be disappointed.

2. Visit the Eiffel Tower

Is it a trip to Paris if you didn’t visit the Eiffel Tower? It’s hard to avoid even if it isn’t something you’re interested in! The tower was initially built as the French government hired engineer, Gustave Eiffel, to design an iconic symbol for France. Today, the structure still stands at around 300 metres tall.

Paris, France

Particularly for first-time visitors, catching a look at the tower is sure to take your breath away. It’s much more grand and beautiful when seeing it with your own eyes than in photographs, but you will be tempted to snap lots of shots.

Take the opportunity to sit on the green facing the tower, particularly in warmer months. You can bring a picnic basket, some French cheese, bread and champagne, and create a memorable experience.

The Eiffel Tower is one of (if not the most) visited paid monuments in the world, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a beautiful view from all angles, particularly during the evenings while the lights sparkle on every hour. It’s not necessary to travel to the top if that’s not your cup of tea, the beauty of the tower can be satisfying enough. However, for those who want to climb the steps, or take a quick elevator to the top, you will find three floors to view the city of Paris from different heights.

As well as the spectacular views, the Eiffel Tower also has restaurants and shops, where you can learn about Paris’ history and culture.

3. Admire art at The Louvre

The Louvre Museum is the most visited art museum in the world. It’s easy to spend a full day out wandering around and admiring the art, even if you’re not an art fanatic. The Louvre is home to incredibly famous art, such as the Venus de Milo sculpture, and of course, the Mona Lisa.

While Leonardo da Vinci’s painting may be slightly underwhelming (especially if you’re not necessarily interested in art), she faces large crowds of tourists every day, eager to see the genius smile that made such an impact between art and the audience. Despite the crowds, it is worth the visit, as not everyone can say that they saw the most well-known piece of art in the world.

But the Mona Lisa isn’t the only painting that will interest you. The stunning pyramid museum offers so much to see and is worth a trip.

4. Visit the Arc de Triomphe

If you’re looking to explore some Parisian history, the Arc de Triomphe is a perfect place to start. The whole city is full of stories, while the Arc de Triomphe is the place of many national events.

Ordered by Napoleon, the arch-shaped monument stands tall in the middle of Place Charles de Gaulle, and at the end of the famous Champs-Élysées. Honouring those who fought and died for France in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, there is also a tomb underneath for “the Unknown Soldier,” commemorating all unidentified soldiers who died in the World Wars.

Spend some time reading the names of French victories and generals on the inner and outer parts of the arch. Afterwards, you can make your way to the top of the arch and admire the city’s history and beauty from above.

Food and drink in Paris

5. Have a bite to eat at Bistrot de la tour Eiffel

If you’re looking for a romantic place to dine, that is much more budget-friendly than many other restaurants in Paris, the Bistrot de la tour Eiffel should not disappoint. If you choose to sit outside, particularly in hot weather, there are seats which give you an excellent view of the tower while its location is extremely close.

The food is great, particularly the burgers, and the staff are welcoming. It can get slightly busy, but it’s usually always possible to find a table.

6. Have lunch at La Maison Rose

Are you a fan of Emily in Paris? Well, La Maison Rose is the perfect place to experience life like the main character…

The elegantly rose-painted French restaurant and bar provide an intimate atmosphere, making it the perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner or lunch. There is a selection of wines, beers and cocktails. While we would recommend booking a table in advance as you’ll find it to be a popular spot for tourists and locals.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable first date or are planning on celebrating your anniversary in Paris then La Maison Rose will impress. The surrounding area is just as stunning, with ivy-covered buildings and cobbled streets, you will feel like you’ve landed right into a fairytale book.

7. Drink a cocktail at a skyline bar

If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city, a trip to Skyline Paris Lounge & Bar at Melia hotel will do just the trick.

Sip on a glass of French champagne, order a fun cocktail or have a Spanish tapas dinner at the stunning restaurant and bar. Situated on the 19th floor of the Melia Paris hotel in La Défense, you will feel like you are right beneath the Parisian sky, particularly on a clear, starry night.

The intimate spot is a firm favourite for those who love an elegant dining experience with the perfect view. The best times to visit are sunset or in the evening, when you can see the Eiffel Tower in all its beauty.

A fun day out for everyone

8. A day out to Disneyland Paris

Re-experience your childhood, grab some mouse ears, and take a trip to Disneyland Paris. It’s easy to travel from the centre of Paris with two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park. There are also seven Disney hotels, some of which offer special theme park rates for visitors.

Exciting rides including the Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain make it a great day out, or holiday, for adults and children. The Walt Disney Studio Park is also perfect for older kids and adults, with thrilling rides such as the Tower of Terror.

Magic is in the air while Disney characters roam the parks. There are plenty of dining options, all with special themes to keep the spirit alive. But two highlights are the breathtaking firework display at Sleeping Beauty’s castle at night time and the fascinating parades where the characters bring all of your childhood adventures to life. You are guaranteed to have a memorable experience any time that you visit Disneyland Paris.

9. Watch a show at Moulin Rouge

If Disney isn’t quite your style, Moulin Rouge might scratch that itch. Originally built in 1889, this has been a popular tourist attraction since it first existed. Visitors are ready with their cameras to photograph the stunning, grand red building and the iconic turret.

It’s not just nice to look at, the Moulin Rouge is a cabaret in Paris, with several shows. Visitors can get a ticket to watch burlesque dancers, can-can dancers, magician shows or an erotic theatre show, known as Le Grand Vaudeville. Perfect for a girl’s day out, Moulin Rouge will provide a fun day with plenty of laughter.

10. Shop at Les Quatre Temps

Paris is full of designer boutiques and big fashion names. But, if you’re on a budget, you can still have a fun shopping trip or a window shopping day around The Westfield Les 4 Temps.

The shopping centre is situated in the business district of Paris. If you’re not staying in the area, it’s easy to hop on a metro toLa Défense. Although the Westfield shopping centre is somewhat similar to many others that you may find in Europe, this can be what makes it a great experience. You will be familiar with many of the shops, such as Sephora, Zara and H&M, yet there are plenty of quirky shops that you’d rarely find anywhere else.

With a variety of restaurants and a cinema, you can easily make this a full-day trip while you treat yourself to some shopping bits. As with any shopping trip, this is suitable for all budgets – you can buy as little, or as much, as you want!
