How to plan a once in a lifetime trip to South-East Asia

Travellers all over the world favour South East Asia as a region to explore. Particularly for Western citizens, the countries within this region provide adventurers with the opportunities to experience something new and different to what they’re familiar with: new cultures, new scenery, different weather, and much more.

South East Asian countries are also known to be a cost-effective way to see the world. Visitors will find accommodation for the same price per night as a coffee in London. For those hoping to explore this beautiful section of the world, but are not sure where to start, these tips should help you begin.

Those who love to travel will be aware of the traveller’s hot spots, such as Thailand and Bali. With many popular gap year destinations in South East Asia, social media is now filled with young adults snorkelling with the turtles in the crisp blue sea, or admiring the stunning sunsets. It can feel too good to be true to visit these luxurious locations, but with the correct planning and research, anyone can find themselves embarking on the trip of a lifetime.

Where to travel in South East Asia and Why?

The countries that I chose to visit were Thailand, Vietnam and Bali in Indonesia. While travelling for six weeks, there were many reasons why these were my chosen destinations. Thailand thrives in the tourism industry, attracting young travellers all year round. The character-filled destination is easy to travel around as a solo traveller or in a group. From the history, culture and exciting parties, it’s no surprise why people fall in love with Thailand.

Vietnam is surrounded by fascinating history. I must admit, I am a big history fan and studied The Vietnam War for my Bachelor’s dissertation, which led me to fall in love with the country and the people in it. For those who have little prior knowledge regarding Vietnam, the country will not disappoint. With so much to offer in terms of food, culture and history, Vietnam is like no other place in the world.

Bali is known for its luxury sunsets and sunrises, crystal clear pools and stunning beaches. A traveller’s paradise for many, Bali inflicts the feeling of freedom and appreciation of the beautiful world that we live in. It is certainly a must-visit for anyone who loves to explore.

How to decide where to travel in South East Asia

Social media is a key tool for any travel planning, especially with the South East Asian region. Instagram, Pinterest and online travel blogs will provide all the information that one needs to plan the perfect trip. But with the perfect photographs, it is necessary to research potential transport routes and pricing to ensure that your plans are achievable.

South East Asia is one of the easiest regions to travel around. The transport links are unmatched, with ferries, buses, trains or even flights all at your doorstep at a reasonable price. Those who don’t like to plan can comfortably travel around and choose where to visit while they go, with many destinations offering simple and easy ways to book accommodation last minute.

How to travel around South East Asia

How did I get from place to place?

Trains, taxis and ferries were the main method of transport used throughout the trip to get to different locations. I flew from the UK to Bangkok, and back home from Denpasar in Bali to the UK. I also flew between countries during my trip. All flights were pre-booked on Skyscanner. However, most trains, taxis and ferries were booked on the day of, or prior, to travelling between each location.

Is it affordable?

The most expensive outgoing were the flights to and from the UK. Hostels and hotels can be booked for as little as £6 a night. For myself, the overall six-week trip cost me around £2000 while predominantly staying in luxury accommodations.

Other popular traveller destinations in South East Asia are Cambodia, Laos, The Philippines and Malaysia.

South Asian countries such as India and Sri Lanka are also great destinations to add to your itinerary.

Wherever you want to travel, there is always a way. For those who are new to taking a large travel trip, take the risk, research, plan and experience the most memorable journeys of your life.
